Dinner for Two
Deviation Actions
Literature Text
In a dimly lit room sat a table and two chairs
Upon the oak table, two candles flickered and flared.
They cast their soft glow upon two plates and two glasses
The room faintly smelled of ginger snaps and molasses.
Attached to this room, was the kitchen where she cooked
Currently, she stood, staring down at a book--
But her eyes were worn with years of strain
The neighbors have already started to wonder if she was still sane.
She hummed to herself, as she stirred the spaghetti
Tasting the sauce--knowing it was close to being ready.
Her frail gentle voice called out into the empty room
"Don't worry, darling. We'll be eating here soon."
With the grace of a dancer, the woman gently went through
The routine of cooking dinner for a family of two.
She got the dish ready. With pride she did glow
Out into the dimly lit room did she soon go.
No one awaited in the chair but she did not see--
Continued to hum as she dished out the spaghetti.
A plate for him, with an extra meatball she knew he'd like
A smaller helping for herself until it felt just right.
She poured out the wine before taking her seat
Smiled at the empty chair before declaring it time to eat.
Though it was only one fork that rose and fell
No other sound lingered inside their small dwell
Eventually the plate was cleaned of the dinner
But the old lady did not move. In fact, looked quite thinner.
Her frail gray hair blew into her face but there was a calm
Her lips still sparkled from her applied lip balm.
Then the candles blew out and the room was pitch black
The old lady's soul floated--in looks she did not lack.
Looking like a beauty in her midtwenties, she stared
Upon her loving husband's soul that sat in the chair.
"Thanks, you always knew this was my favorite dish
It's been so long darling. It is you I've greatly missed."
He got from the table. His soul now united with his wife
And together the two made their way into the afterlife.
